Monthly Dinner and Card Party

Check our announcements and fliers for dates and times for our monthly get-togethers for some food and card tournaments - Euchre and Pinochle. Normally held the last Saturday of the month depending on other upcoming events, the April and may "parties" had young and old compete.

2012 "RAT" (Muskrat Dinner) in Review

Once again, gourmands of this delicacy arrived early (long before the announced door opening) to enjoy the finest "rats" in all of Michigan.

Unfortunately, no active or retired Island Lion or Lioness recalls the date of the first Annual Harsens Island Lions Rat Dinner. One thing is certain however, Lions and Lionesses started the event sometime in the late '40's or early '50's suggesting that this was most likely our 60th (+4 or -2) special dinner.

Still a stag occasion, our guests enjoy this annual dinner and eagerly compete for the many raffle prizes donated by local and area residents and businesses.

 From tools to hunting and fishing gear including a weapon or two, the raffles support our charitable donations to community and Lions International causes.

 As the story goes, the "rats" are prepared according to an "old Indian recipe" passed on to the latest "fryers and roasters". But, the preparations start the Saturday morning before the day (2nd Tuesday in February) of the feast. Lions and their helpers see to it that the "rats" are  ready for the three processing phases guaranteeing the finest dinner serving as seen on the collage below.

Thank you very much for your participation at all our events. You made these events with your generous support of all the functions.  In spite of some challenging weather conditions, the Annual Turkey Shoot ended successfully Monday evening.
There were too many helping hands to mention but very much appreciated.

As always, we are looking forward to our Halloween party Oct. 31, from 5:30 - 7:00PM

Island Winter Happenings!

The Island Crier
Winter Edition 11/12 ends with the April/May edition.

We are back with our first edition after the "Harsens Island Flier's" last edition over Labor Day weekend  Labor Day.

Thanks to Lion Gary Grout, we are able to provide a monthly not-for profit publication that provides the Islanders with an off season (winter months only) "CRIER" to promote, post civic activities and generally “keep in touch”.

The editor is Lion Gary Grout, garygrout76@comcast.net. He will accept your announcements monthly until the 15th of the month precedding publication.

 Copies will be available again at participating businesses in town.

White Cane Solicitation

Once again, Lions will be offering a symbol of our service to the blind. During the last weekend in April and the first weekend in May, Harsens Island Lions will offer a smal white cane pin or tag for a donation. Please stop and donate whatever you can to help support Lions charitable endeavors.
